Western Red Cedar wood fence installation in Denver by Valenzuela Fence

Custom Wood Fences
Built with Western Red Cedar.

From classic dog-ear privacy fences to modern horizontal slat designs, we build wood fences that look beautiful on install day — and still look beautiful 15 years later. Cedar sourced direct from Pacific Northwest mills.

The fence that ages like a craftsman's hand.

Wood fences — particularly Western Red Cedar — remain the most popular fence material in Denver and all Colorado for a reason: they combine natural beauty, strong privacy, and real durability when built correctly.

But a wood fence is only as good as the hands that build it. Post depth, concrete footing, rail alignment, picket spacing, and gate hardware all determine whether your fence stays square for decades or starts leaning after the first Colorado windstorm.

At Valenzuela Fence, we've installed over 200 wood fences across Denver metro. We set posts minimum 24 inches deep in concrete, pre-treat cut ends, use stainless or ceramic-coated fasteners, and build with cedar that we source direct from the mill — not the economy lumber you find at big-box stores.

Not every fence needs to be six feet tall. Three- and four-foot cedar fences define front yards, line driveways, and meet agricultural needs without blocking views.

The wood we use — and why it matters.

Not all cedar is created equal. The wood you choose determines how long your fence lasts, how it weathers, and how it looks five years in.

— Our Standard

Western Red Cedar

The gold standard for wood fencing in Colorado. Natural tannins and oils resist rot, insects, and warping. Weathers to a beautiful silver-grey if left untreated, or holds stain like no other softwood. We source ours direct from Pacific Northwest mills for better grain, tighter knots, and more consistent sizing than what you find at big-box stores.

Western Red Cedar

Highest Grade of lumber, including premium finished posts and rails. This includes #1 grades and also 3/4 inch thickness of Fence Slats.

Premium combination of different fineshes for different taste in fence style.

Premium
— Budget Option

Pressure-Treated Pine

The most economical wood fence option. Treated pine resists rot through chemical treatment rather than natural oils. We'll install treated pine when budget is the priority, but we always recommend cedar when it fits the budget — the long-term value difference is significant.

Economical
— Posts

Cedar or Steel Posts

For cedar fences, we typically use 4x4 or 6x6 cedar posts set 24 inches deep in concrete. For maximum wind resistance on long runs or 8ft fences, we also offer galvanized steel posts  — combining steel strength with cedar aesthetics.

Questions, Answered

Wood fence FAQs.

How long does a cedar fence last in Denver?
Properly installed Western Red Cedar fences typically last 15-20 years in Colorado's climate without stain, and 25-30+ years when maintained with a quality oil stain every 3-5 years. The biggest factors are post depth (we set ours 36" in concrete), fastener quality, and whether the top of the fence is protected with a cap board. Cheap cedar from big-box stores may only last 10-12 years even with proper installation.
How long does installation take?
Most standard residential fence installs (100-200 linear feet) take 1-3 working days. Day 1 is typically tear-out of the existing fence and post-setting. Day 2 is rail and picket installation after the concrete cures. Day 3 is for gates, hardware, cleanup, and final walk-through. Larger projects or HOA-approval jobs may take longer. We give you an exact timeline in writing with your quote.
Do I need HOA approval before you can start?
If you live in an HOA community, yes — you'll need architectural review committee (ARC) approval before we can install. We help with this: we provide the materials list, style drawings, stain color samples, and any other documentation your HOA needs. Most approvals take 2-6 weeks depending on your HOA's meeting schedule. We recommend submitting for approval as soon as you book with us so we can install as soon as it comes through.
What's included in your 5-year workmanship warranty?
Our 5-year workmanship warranty covers any defects caused by how we installed your fence — leaning posts, loose pickets, gate sag, rail failures, or hardware issues that result from installation errors. It does not cover natural wood behavior (shrinkage, warping, checking), weather damage (windstorms, falling trees, hail), vandalism, or issues caused by customer-directed modifications. If anything we built fails during the warranty period, we fix it at no cost to you.
Should I stain my new cedar fence right away?
No — new cedar needs to weather for 3-6 months before staining. The wood releases mill oils and moisture during this period, and staining too early traps moisture against the wood and causes stain failure. After 3-6 months (depending on sun exposure), the wood is ready for a power wash and premium oil stain like Messmer's, Penofin, or Sikkens ProLuxe. We offer staining as a separate service once your fence is ready.
Can you match an existing fence style?
Usually yes. If you need to extend, replace a section, or match a neighbor's fence, bring us photos and we can usually source matching cedar and replicate the build style. For HOA communities that require uniform fencing, we're experienced at matching community standards exactly.
Do you remove and haul away the old fence?
Yes. Tear-out and disposal of the existing fence is included in our quote. We handle all demolition, debris hauling, and concrete removal from old post footings. You get back a clean, ready-to-enjoy fence line.
